Watch: Samsung Galaxy S8 Iris Scanner Get Hacked In 3 Simple Steps

Samsung S8's Iris scanner in work

A recent video showcasing, how to fool the Samsung S8's iris scanner has recently surfaced on the internet. The video uses a simple 3 step procedure to hack into the Iris scanner that Samsung claims is 100x better and secure than your fingerprint sensor. There is still speculation about the video's authenticity but for now, this seems a legitimate way to fool the Samsung S8's Iris scanner.

You can watch the video on this link. The exploit used for the hacking the Iris scanner is not really possible without equipment that includes: a camera that can capture infrared light, a laser printer, and a contact lens.

So according to the video, the idea here is to get a photo of the subject's eye using the infra-red image capturing camera. Once you have the image, you need to print out the photo big enough so that the contact lens can be placed over the 2-D printed eye. Once you have placed the contact lens on the eye, simply activate the Iris Scanner of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and watch it get fooled.

According to the uploader, the contact lens helps give the 2-D printed eye a 3-D curvature that Samsung's Iris Scanner expects from a real 3-D eye.

A spokesperson from Samsung was asked his opinions on the video and Samsung had this to say, "We are aware of the issue, but we would like to assure our customers that the iris scanning technology in the Galaxy S8 has been developed through rigorous testing to provide a high level of accuracy and prevent attempts to compromise its security, such as images of a person's iris. If there is a potential vulnerability or the advent of a new method that challenges our efforts to ensure security at any time, we will respond as quickly as possible to resolve the issue."

This statement does not really assure us that the video is fake, in fact, I might be starting to believe that this vulnerability found by the uploader might be totally real.
