by Alexies Fraser / May 07, 2017 07:21 PM EDT
Motorola launches Moto Z Droid with Moto Mods at High Line on August 4, 2016 in New York City.

Motorola will unveil a mid-range Moto Z2 Play soon with a surprise downgrade to its battery capacity.

Lenovo-owned Motorola’s first generation of modular phones is some of the slimmest handsets available. Prolific leaker Evan Blass says that the Moto Z2 Play will be a millimeter thinner this year that is 6mm and it is also 20g lighter than the first generation Moto Z Play

Moto Z2 Play will be powered by a Snapdragon 626 chip with a 2.2GHz clock speed. It will keep the same graphical processing chip, an Adreno 506. The upcoming device of Motorola will run under Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Compared to its predecessor, Moto Z2 Play will offer 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

The handset will feature 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080 x 1920 screen resolution. Moto Z2 Play will have a 12MP rear camera with the improved f/1.7 aperture as well as dual auto-focus feature while the front-facing camera is 5MP. The downgrade for the rear camera means a lower resolution but improved image quality. For comparison, previous Moto Z play has 16MP rear camera with f/2.0 module

The biggest downgrade for the second generation of Moto Z Play is the battery life. From 3510mAh, the Moto Z2 Play will only have 3000mAh. It cuts the battery estimate from 50 hours to just 30. It will be available in two color options: Lunar Gray and Fine Gold.

The Moto Z2 Play is one of three handsets in the refreshed Moto Z2 lineup, and among the first in a series of Motorola phones set to be launched throughout the rest of 2017. Handsets include are new entry-level Moto C and C Plus, the Moto E4 and E4 Plus, and the aforementioned Moto Z2 and Moto Z2 Force.

For the price and official launch of the Moto Z2 Play, there is no word yet from the company. But like most of the Moto Z-branded modular devices, it is likely to have an affordable price tag.
