An alleged concept cover art for the new "Call of Duty" game.

"Call of Duty," in recent years, has been featuring modern day and futuristic skirmishes that have awed most players and game critics alike. However, recent talks are now suggesting that the war-themed franchise will be returning back from where it all started.

If rumor mills are anything to go by, game developer Sledgehammer Games is said to be bringing back the "Call of Duty" franchise to the second world war era as the title of the yet to be announced game sequel will be dubbed "Call of Duty WWII." Such speculations came to fruition as alleged spy shots of the of the game's concept art and casings made rounds online.

What made Activision arrive at that decision - provided that rumors fit in the bag, is the fact that the recent installment of the franchise - "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare," did not receive much loving from both players and gaming connoisseurs as the figures were laid at Activision's recent earnings call. Hence, the game publisher made an assurance to its backers that the title will go "back to its roots," according to Eurogamer.

The said move seemed to have been on queue years before as Sledgehammer co-founder Michael Condrey expressed his interest in bringing back "Call of Duty" into the WWII battlefield. Condrey added that a next gen title alongside "the latest production values and robustness" in a WWII setup would be a great idea.

"Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare," on the other hand, has tapped Wu-Tang Clan member and record producer Method Man (Clifford Smith) in doing some voice over work within the title. The rapper recalled the time when he got the call asking if he could do such. He added that he was at "full stop" when it was offered to him and remembered fellow rapper Snoop Dogg did the same with "Call of Duty: Ghosts," Gamespot reported.

It is said that a new "Call of Duty" game will be announced and it is believed to be launched sometime in April or May though such has to be taken with a grain of salt. In the meantime, watch videos about the rumored "Call of Duty" title here:
