South Korean conglomerate Samsung is all set in launching their latest iteration of Galaxy S handsets namely the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+. However, memories of the best-forgotten Note 7 still haunts the tech firm after it cost them billions of dollars. In line with this, the company has devised a plan to finally put an end to the dreaded handset.

On Friday, March 24, Samsung announced that they will disable the remaining units of the Galaxy Note 7 that are still out in the wild. It was revealed that the company will be rolling out a forced software update that will eventually kill the device's battery charging capabilities deeming it useless, according to The Korea Herald.

Prior to this, Samsung also released updates that prevented the phablet from gaining access to certain networks. Additionally, the company also stated that they already retrieved 97 percent of the phones in South Korea alone while there are thousands more that are still out there.

The Galaxy Note 7 was supposed to be Samsung's answer to Apple's iPhone 7 as the former was launched and released in August 2016. Samsung's Justin Denison even boasted back then the phablet's audio jack as the said component was already scrapped by Apple for the current iPhone, Daily Mail has reported.

However, due to the Galaxy Note 7's battery size, the handset rose to infamy as a substantial number of the mentioned phone model exhibited a very volatile nature that some even endangered the lives of its users. A month after it came out, Samsung chief D.J. Koh announced the recall of 2.5 million units of the phone adding that these users will be getting a replacement.

Albeit the replacement, the issue persisted and left Samsung with no other choice but to pull off the plug to the Galaxy Note 7's lifeline. This smartphone snafu has caused Samsung $5 billion in losses. Watch a report about the Note 7 here:
