Trump Wall To Create Refugee Camps On Border With Mexico

News in Brief -- January 26th -- 20:30 GMT

Amnesty International (AI) said today that it will fight "with all its might" against the border wall proposed by U.S President Donald Trump. The reason being that it poses a danger and will lead to the creation of refugee camps on the border between Mexico and the United States. That's a grave fallout that Mr. Trump inadvertently overlooked, at least from a humanitarian and moral perspective.

"We will not let President Donald Trump create refugee camps along the US-Mexico border like we have seen in Greece, Australia and other countries," said AI executive director Margaret Huang in the United States, it's a statement.

Trump signed a number of immigration-related executive orders Wednesday, including building a wall along the Mexican border, opening more immigration detention centers, and eliminating federal funding for so-called "shelter cities."

Huang said that AI will fight "against this dangerous move with all its forces".

"This wall will send the message that those who come from other countries, especially those in Latin America, must be feared and rejected and that is terrible," he said.

Since the presidential election, AI has raised concerns about Trump's statements and warned of the gravity of turning his rhetoric into actions that threaten human rights.

"We must not allow Trump's anti-refugee rhetoric to continue fueling a policy that affects the lives of millions of people seeking protection," said AI.

With its "I welcome you" campaign, AI protects the rights of refugees and asylum seekers, documenting human rights abuses and ensuring that the authorities exercise fair actions to address this global humanitarian crisis, he said.

Finally, AI said it has reported that Trump is planning for the signing of other executive orders related to refugees this week, such as the ban on travel of people from Muslim-majority countries, as well as other national security measures. EFE
