IU Talks About Controversial Album 'Chat-shire'
IU talked about her controversial album 'Chat-shire' during her recent concert.
During IU's concert entitled "Twenty-Four Steps: One, Two, Three, Four" held on December 3 and 4, the singer-actress talked about her controversial 4th mini album, "Chat-shire", which was released last year.
Although the mini-album stirred national (and even global) controversy, the 23-year-old singer-actress pointed out that the album was her attempt to be very honest with her own feelings to her fans and herself.
"I wanted to create an album in which I could be honest. I pressed into it the things I felt as a 23-year-old, the boredom and gravity of life, and my playfulness. The day I finished working on that album, I had a good night's rest," she said.
Although IU admitted her shortcomings as someone new in producing an album and even said sorry for it, she also insisted that the album still depicts who she really is.
"It was my first time producing [an album] so there were many weak spots and I felt greatly sorry. I felt regret, thinking I had to create better music for people to listen to, but the album in its state is still who I am. It's my 'injured finger," she said.
Her 4th mini-album 'Chat-shire' stirred controversies because of the song "ZeZe". Various critics were saying that the song suggests pedophilia. IU, however, explained that she didn't write the song with the idea of sexualizing a 5-year-old boy in mind.
"I swear I did not write the lyrics sexualizing a five-year-old boy. The Zeze you sense in the lyrics is just a third party that emphasizes the motif of the novel. However, I came to know that a lot of people heard my song and were offended and scared by my lyrics. This is my fault as an amateur songwriter," the singer-actress explained.
Zeze is a 5-year-old boy character of a Brazillian children's novel entitled "My Sweet Orange Tree". It is very popular worldwide and even among Koreans through translation.
