Nonstop Protests Asking President Park to Step Down Will be Staged for the Next Couple of Weeks
For the next couple of weeks, nonstop protests asking President Park to step down from her office is expected to occur. The protesters gathered at Cheonggye Plaza, Seoul, last Saturday evening, October 29, with signs that say "Park Geun-hye Resign". This protest is said to be staged every 7PM until November 12. This is in connection with the political whirlwind that is happening in South Korea for the past weeks involving President Park Geun-hye and her confidant, Choi Soon-sil.
This nonstop candlelight vigil-style rally, which is organized by mostly progressive civic groups, is expected to happen for the next couple of weeks. The protesters are asking two things; for President Park to resign from her office, and for the government to conduct a thorough investigation on Choi Soon-sil scandal. More protesters are even expected to join the protests asking President Park to step down from her office on November 5 and 12.
Aside from these ongoing protests asking President Park to step down, it is also reported that Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, one of the biggest umbrella unions in the country, is also planning to demand Park to resign. The union is said to hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday to discuss the matter. They are coming up with their own demands with regards to Park's resignation.
Although these protests asking President Park to step down is expected to run until the second week of November, the Korean National Police Agency assures that they will do everything to guarantee peaceful rallies. They said they are studying ways on how to control the rallies to avoid chaos from happening. They said they wanted to keep the rallies peaceful without obstructing people's freedom of assembly.
