SHINee Grooves to the 90s Beat in New Album
On October 4, one of SM Entertainment's boy groups, SHINee, performed on their comeback showcase for their 5th full album titled "1 of 1." The group members shared their thoughts on the 90s' retro concept for their upcoming comeback, according to a report from allkpop.
The group's title track, "1 of 1" is a New Jack Swing genre, a combination of the old, 90s' Rhythm and Blues with a more contemporary, hip-hop sound. SHInee also took on a 90s' retro vibe for their MV and stage concept.
Member Jonghyun stated, "We utilized retro fashion and backgrounds profusely. It could be seen as a risky introduction to retro. At first, we worried whether it would come out chic or not, but because the title track is retro, we went with the retro vibe all around. We will take on retro the SHINee way. However, there is a natural feel to it, so middle school and high school students these days might wonder what it is. But because it is a different image, it will be more noticeable."
Another member, Key, further added, "We planned on the choreography as an easy one that you can watch comfortably. We simplified the rhythm and enlarged our movements. But there is still a lot of movements, so it has no change from SHINee's usual, busy choreography."
The album is comprised of nine songs including "Prism," "U Need Me," "Don't Stop," "Shift," and "So Amazing." Jonghyun composed "Prism" with six other composers. World-class producers such as Underdogs, Stereotypes, and London Noise, and songwriters Kenzie and Deez took part in making the album.
Fellow SM Entertainment artist, Girls' Generation's Sooyoung, hosted the event and gave advice to the boys of SHINee by saying, "I hope you will stick to the belief that 'SHINee's songs are always right.'"
