South Korea Dropped To 3rd Place in Final Asian World Cup Qualifying Round

The South Korea team dropped to third place in the group ranking after their two matches in the final Asian World Cup qualifying round.

South Korea opened their match with a 3-2 win over China at home last week. However, South Korea settled a scoreless draw with Syria on Tuesday.

The Uzbekistan team reached the first place with their two straight victories in Group A in the last Asian qualification stage in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Uzbekistan beat Syria with a score of 1-0 last Thursday and edged out Qatar 1-0 on the road Tuesday.

Iran, after two matches, got a win and a draw. Iran got a 2-0 victory against Qatar and a 0-0 draw with China. Iran is in second place over South Korea due to the superior goal difference and plus-2 to zero.

China and Syria both have a draw and a loss while Qatar has two losses and dropped to the last place.

In the final round, there are a total of 12 teams which are divided into two groups of six. The top two teams from each group will be given a wild card advantage to play at the World Cup. The two third-place nations will have a playoff.

The next World Cup competition will be hosted by Qatar on October 6. South Korea is looking for a ninth consecutive World Cup appearance before visiting Iran.

Moreover, in Group B, Australia and Saudi Arabia are in first and second place both with two consecutive victories and they are followed by Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq and Thailand.

South Korea first joined the World Cup qualification in 1954. Three countries from the AFC participated in the competition namely China, Japan, and South Korea. However, China withdraw in the competition while South Korea won against Japan and qualified for the World Cup for the first time. South Korea is at 16th place in the World Cup rankings.
