Walmart, the US supermarket giant, has plans put in place to fire 7,000 workers from its back office and accounting jobs across its US stores according to a report from BBC.

The Supermarket Chain giant came to a decision after finishing a pilot test in 500 stores this summer of a new accounting system.

Walmart released a statement saying that affected employees would be given the option of moving into jobs serving customers if ever they choose to stay leading to a possible change in pay or hours for the workers.

Walmart, the largest employer in the US, has been trying to increase the number of staff who deal with customers.

"This is about simplifying how stores work, there are a number of initiatives that are designed to get more associates in front of our customers," said a representative for Walmart to BBC.

The said changes will be implemented in the second half of 2016 all the way into 2017.

For the past few years Walmart has been the target of trade union due to complaints on worker salary.

Earlier this year the company raised its minimum wage rate to $10 per hour and changed its scheduling system to improve staffing at peak hours.
