Acer Introduces Predator 21: World’s First Curved Screen Laptop

by Agatha Austria / Sep 02, 2016 06:23 AM EDT
Acer releases Predator 21 with curved screen.

Acer unveiled Predator 21 which is the world's first curved screen laptop.

Curved screens were first seen in televisions three years ago with a goal of providing optimum IMAX-like feel to viewers. In fact, South Korean company Samsung already released two high-end curved screen TVs. Similarly, Acer aims to provide more excitement to gamers with their curved technology.

The screen of Predator 21 has a width of 53.3 centimeters. Greater gaming experience does not only come from  larger screen size but also from the laptop's eye tracking software which utilizes dynamic lighting and enables users to point at targets just by staring at them. Further, users can easily spot enemies or switch their mirrors to rearview during racing games.

Aside from Acer, MSI also creates laptops with sensors.

Predator 21 is not just wider but also four times heavier than an ordinary laptop. This eight kilo portable computer "matches the natural curve of the eyes and gives a wider field of view" according to the Director of Mobile and Options Divisions of Acer Europe, John Miedema.

However, David Mercer of Strategy Analytics stated that "Curved screens are great if you are in exactly the right position... but as soon as you are not in the ideal place you get distortions of the image and glare." Dave James of PCGamesN said that curved screens are "a bit of a marketing gimmick because while 21 inches is massive in laptop terms, it's not particularly big in general screen real estate." James added that user has to be extremely close to the screen to really experience the effect, BBC reported.

Daily Mail mentioned that curved screens were initially designed to aid disabled people in controlling computers.

The Taiwan based company is set to release the curved-screen laptop on January 2017 but price is yet to be revealed.
