The new crime thriller, "The Wailing," has become a popular film even before its official release. According to the Korean Film Council, the film has the highest number of first-day views for any film released on the eve of its official opening day in South Korea.

"The Wailing," directed by Na Hong-jin, gathered 170,391 viewers in over 7 hours on Wednesday, a report from Yonhap suggests. The popular film's debut has knocked down the box office champion "Captain America: Civil War," to the number two spot. The American film received only 80,583 views on Wednesday.

The previous record holder for most first-day views was held by the 2012 Korean film "The Berlin File."

"The Wailing" is about a village that begins to experience mysterious murders after a new person comes into town. Featured in the film are actors Kwak Do-won, Chun Woo-hee, and Hwang Jung-min.

The film has received positive reviews so far and has also been pre-sold to about 10 countries, including the U.S., France, and China.
