iOS 9 Wifi Assist - Incessant Data Consumer? Tips On How To Tweak Data Usage

One of the features rolled out in Apple's latest software update is the iOS 9 Wi-Fi Assist, which is supposed to ensure users to get the best connection possible. However, more complaints have been brought about the said feature recently as it is reported to consume mobile date incessantly when activated, according to Engadget.

A common observation on iOS 9 Wi-Fi Assist is that if you're in a weak hotspot and your connection is still on either 3G or 4G, the feature could consume up your mobile data into zero, especially for those who don't have unlimited data plans. This is turned on by default in Apple's mobile devices, which raises into another issue that this could hamper on the device's performance for online games.

However, another angle to look on regarding the issue with iOS 9's Wi-Fi Assist is how users actually configure their settings in their devices. This is often being overlooked by most users as when the mobile device is connected on a Wi-Fi hotspot, one does not need to worry about extra charges as they can get all the updates for their games and apps over Wi-Fi - for free.

However, as soon as the device is no longer within the hotspot area, it turns out that most apps installed update automatically whether in Wi-Fi or in mobile data, according to a report from Express UK.

This could mean that users must ensure to check the settings of their installed apps frequently, and note all the applications that consume the most number of data. They could check it within the Mobile Data settings menu. And if they need to select few apps to get access to mobile data anywhere, they may try disabling Background App Refresh - such as in Spotify, for example, and casual games.

The iOS 9 Wi-Fi Assist is included in Apple's most recent software update, which was released on September 30. Other features include Wallet (formerly Passbook), 3D Touch, battery performance and security improvements.
