Charlie Hunnam Not Leading The 'Sons Of Anarchy' Spin Off? Series Creator Teases Mayan Prequel

"Sons of Anarchy" creator Kurt Sutter is developing a spin off to his long-running biker drama series, which ended its run with record ratings in late 2014. Although Sutter is keeping mum about details of the upcoming show, it is believed that the plot will center on the Mayans Motorcycle Club.

Several rumors have surfaced claiming that Charlie Hunnam will return to his role as Jax Teller, although the news is yet to be confirmed.

While the "Crimson Peak" star's return is still uncertain, Sutter says that the show will still involve The Mayans.

"We were talking about the idea of doing things for other markets, like the Spanish-speaking market," Sutter told Deadline. "I casually said I'd be open to doing something with the Mayans. It's the same [biker] subculture, but it'd be interesting to see the influences of that culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand."

He also clarified that "Sons of Anarchy" spinoff won't be a prequel, which diminishes the chances of Charlie Hunnam's return. However, he teased that "familiar characters" will appear in the show.

"I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn't step on the mythology that's already been told," Sutter told the entertainment outlet. "It doesn't mean that there couldn't be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed."

Sutter touched on the possible location of the spin off, and revealed the he plans on setting it outside the town of Charming.

"I wouldn't want to set it too close to the world we already know, and step on that," he explained. "It would be cannibalizing what we worked very hard to create and I wouldn't do anything to undermine."

"We're figuring out what that would look like and I'm in the process of meeting with writers and narrowing it down. My intent is, over the hiatus I'll initiate a script for the pilot and take it from there," he added.

Can a "Sons of Anarchy" spin off survive without franchise star Charlie Hunnam? Stay tuned for more updates as they become available!
