'Lucifer' TV Series Gets Solid Premiere; Reviews Not Exactly Great For New Fox Show
The premiere of new Fox TV series "Lucifer" opened to solid ratings but reviews aren't that good.
Deadline reported that the DC-based show starring Tom Ellis in the title role, garnered a "2.4 rating in 18-49 and 7.2 million viewers, tying Rosewood as Fox's highest-rated series launch this season in Live+same day."
"Lucifer" TV series review, on the other hand, ranged from average to positive.
The Hollywood Reporter said the show could be just another procedural series and it "doesn't begin to show sparks of interest until at least the fifth episode."
Slate.com has a much harsher take on the new Fox TV series saying it is "apocalyptically bad."
"The mere existence of this show might well be proof that the Beast of Revelation already walks among us, spreading not terror but bad television," it said. "If the premise sounds stupid-and as executed here it is very stupid-rest assured that it didn't have to be."
Cinema Blend spoke positive on its "Lucifer" TV series review though. It said the comic book-based show is "as fun and flashy as its promotions have promised" but warned that one should not "go into this one expecting anything more extraordinary."
Although critical reviews were not that good for "Lucifer" TV series premiere, some are commending it for giving the source material a nod. Series showrunner Joe Henderson said they will keep Lucifer Morningstar loyal to the comics.
"I wouldn't actually call him a good guy; he's like any of us, he's shades of gray," he told The Hollywood Reporter.
"He's a fallen son, a wayward son, someone who wanted what his dad had and his dad said no and kicked him out of the house. What the pilot conveys is the idea of him wanting to be able to make his own choices and embrace what he desires."
He added, "And when he comes to Earth, so much of it is looking at humanity and what they desire, and why they aren't doing that. Why not embrace it and be true to yourself? That is the character we took from the comics and that's the character that's going to live on the show."
Will reviews change after "Lucifer" TV series' premiere? This remains to be seen.
The next episode is called "Lucifer, Stay. Good Devil" and will air on Feb. 1.
