SK Group Chairman Chey Tae Won Resumes ‘Field Management’ After Extramarital Scandal
SK Group revealed Wednesday that Chairman Chey Tae Won has resumed his "field management" after being involved in an extramarital scandal. Chey admitted last month that he had an affair with a woman, surnamed Kim.
The 55-year-old chairman also revealed that the relationship resulted to the birth of a child.
"Years ago, director Roh [Soh Yeong] and I started discussing getting a divorce, but the legal process was delayed since the company was subjected to a tax audit and other complicated matters," he wrote in the letter, as noted by Korea Joongang Daily Dec. 30. "In the meantime, I met a person who helped me overcome such hardships and [I] started dreaming of having a life together with her. I then got a baby a few years ago."
Sources said that the chairman met the woman after spending seven months inside the jail for the alleged accounting fraud back in 2003. Kim reportedly gave birth to a baby girl in 2010.
A month after dropping the bombshell, the chairman has reportedly carried on with his duties. He reportedly visits group affiliates and business partners across South Korea, as per Korea Times Wednesday.
Chey is also slated to attend the Davos forum happening in Switzerland from January 19 to 23 to meet with policymakers and business directors coming from different parts of the world.
It is not the first time for the chairman to take care of business somewhere else," an official of SK Group said. "He doesn't have to be at the group headquarters to perform his duties."
"Chey has been keeping himself busy, hosting a series of meetings with group executives and business partners. He is also spending a lot of time checking on affiliates in provincial areas."
The official continued, "As far as I know, Chey will go to the forum to boost ties with business leaders and other opinion leaders from across the globe. He will also play an important role at a "Korea Night" event. But here in the country, he will likely continue to stay away from the public spotlight for the foreseeable future."
