'Underworld 5' Release Date Announced; Franchise To Be Adapted Into TV Series?

Screen Gems, the backing studio for the "Underworld" series, has confirmed the "Underworld 5" movie release date.

According to Screen Rant, the film will pick up after the events of the last film, "Underworld: Awakening," which saw main character Selene waking from cryogenic sleep only to discover that humans have begun hunting both Lycans and Vampires.

Little is known about the upcoming movie's plot, although National Post claimed that Selene will start to show her human age in the upcoming installment.

Theo James ("The Divergent Series") who had a brief role in "Awakening" reprises his character as Selene's ally, David. English actors Tobias Menzies ("Outlander," Rome") and Lara Pulver ("Sherlock") take on their respective roles of a new Lycan leader and an ambitious Vampire. Also starring are Charles Dance ("Game of Thrones"), Peeter Andersson ("The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"), Bradley James ("Damien"), Daisy Head ("Fallen") and newcomer Clementine Nicholson.

Production commenced in the Czech Republic in November 2015, working towards the "Underworld 5" movie release date in this year. Helming the project is Anna Foerster, whose directorial resume includes episodes of "Outlander" and "Criminal Minds," is widely known for her work as cinematographer on "Independence Day," "The Day After Tomorrow," and "White House Down."

2003's "Underworld" focused on a clandestine group of aristocratic Vampires and their bitter blood feud with the Lycans (Werewolves). The balance of power in the city is disturbed when Selene falls in love with Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman), the world's first Vampire/Werewolf hybrid.

The success of the first film spawned several sequels: "Underworld: Evolution" (2006), "Underworld: Rise of The Lycans" (2009), and the latest installment "Underworld: Awakening" (2012), which is also the most successful installment to date with a $160-million worldwide gross. The franchise has a total gross of $458.2 million.

"Underworld 5" movie release date is on Oct. 21, 2016.
