Rock Star MIYAVI Joins Korean Drama Cast as Family Relocates to Seoul
Japanese guitarist MIYAVI has been cast in tvN's upcoming thriller drama "How to Become a Building Owner in Korea," coinciding with his family's recent move to Seoul.
SPOTV News reported on June 18 that the musician will play Morgan Lee, executive director of Real Capital, in what marks his debut in Korean television. The casting gains additional significance as his wife, singer Melody, recently announced their family's relocation to Seoul.
The family's move represents a major shift for MIYAVI, who returned to Tokyo in 2021 after seven years in Los Angeles. Born to a Japanese mother and Korean father whose family emigrated from Jeju Island, the 43-year-old artist appears to be embracing his Korean heritage professionally.
The drama follows a debt-ridden building owner who becomes entangled in crime when a fake kidnapping turns real. Ha Jung Woo will star as the protagonist, with filming set to begin in the second half of 2025.
MIYAVI's Korean connections extend beyond heritage. He collaborated with Kim Jaejoong on "Dopamine," featured on the former JYJ member's 2024 album "Flower Garden". The collaboration demonstrated his existing relationships within Korea's music industry.
Known as the "Samurai Guitarist" for his finger-slapping technique, MIYAVI has successfully transitioned from visual kei rock to international acting. His film credits include "Unbroken" (2014), "Kong: Skull Island" (2017), and "Hell Dogs."
MIYAVI began his career in 1999 with visual kei band Dué le Quartz before launching his solo career in 2002. He has released multiple albums and toured internationally, establishing himself as one of Japan's most recognizable rock exports.
Married to Japanese-American singer Melody since 2009, the couple has three children. Their decision to relocate to Seoul suggests a long-term commitment to Korean market expansion.
The drama casting positions MIYAVI alongside established Korean actors, potentially opening doors for future Korean entertainment projects. As Asian entertainment markets increasingly collaborate across borders, his move represents the growing trend of artists expanding beyond their home countries to build regional careers.
With "How to Become a Building Owner in Korea" scheduled for tvN broadcast, MIYAVI's television debut will test whether his rock star charisma translates to Korean drama audiences.
