Netflix, a well-known online streaming platform, is considering to limit password sharing among its users.

The company announced on March 11 that it is currently testing a feature that asks users to verify if they and the real account holder are living in the same house. A code will be sent to their phones or to their email accounts for this process.

ABC News was told by Netflix that the said initiative aims to make sure that those who are using the site are really authorized. It can be noted that the platform allows multiple profiles per account depending on their monthly plan. However, it is in the terms of service that users of an account must live in the same household.

As of this writing, there are no clear details regarding the number of users that the platform is using for the test. However, several people on social media shared what they experienced recently on the streaming site.

A Twitter user showed a screenshot where Netflix reminded him that to be able to have continuous access to the site. He must be living with the owner of the account.

He even described the said move as a kind of "purge."

In 2016, Reed Hastings, the co-founder, and chief executive of Netflix, willingly talked about password sharing through a webcast.

"Password sharing is something you have to learn to live with because there's so much legitimate password sharing, like you sharing with your spouse, with your kids, so there's no bright line, and we're doing fine as is," he quipped.

Netflix continues to be the world's largest streaming service. It observed a spike in the number of users amid the novel coronavirus pandemic when most people stay in their homes and surf the internet. It always tests new features in the hope of bringing a better experience to the users.
