Kpop4Planet: K-pop Fans Around The Globe Unite For Climate Action
K-pop fans from every corner of the globe are united as one under the "Kpop4Planet" platform to fight the climate crisis.
BLACKPINK and BTS are among the many K-pop groups who have led the movement by engaging their millions of fans to act on climate change.
K-pop followers also used their social media power by engaging in political issues, including mobilizing funds for the Black Lives Matter crusade in the United States last year and supporting Thailand's pro-democracy protests.
This time the group is progressively spoken on climate change, outstanding youth limelight on environmental issues that get comparatively wide attention in some parts of the world.
Reports said that Indonesia's affected floods received nearly $100,000 from K-pop fans in January of this year. In recent years, the fans have also planted thousands of trees throughout South Korea and the Philippines.
"Climate change is the crisis of our generation. With K-pop fans mostly consisting of Gen Z and millennials, we are the ones who will be most severely affected by decisions taken or not taken today. Fighting for climate justice means fighting for our future," said Nurul Sarifah, Kpop4Planet's organizer, in a press release.
Sarifah said that they use social media as an engaging platform for K-pop fans worldwide to discuss and raise awareness on climate change issues affecting their home cities.
"Every day we are experiencing these effects: pollution, heat waves, floods, wildfires. We can change this by doing good, just like how our idols did so that we can enjoy K-pop on a liveable planet," she said.
The movement is just one of K-pop fans' latest campaigns seeking to make a difference for nature and the climate.
"Leading up to COP26 and beyond, Kpop4Planet is a space for all K-pop fandoms to show their passion for climate justice. K-pop fans have been on the forefront of social justice initiatives- trolling Trump, drowning out racist hashtags on Twitter, educating their faves on cultural appropriation AND fighting for climate justice. We want to say thank you! #kpop4planet #kpopforclimatejustice," a statement from Kpop4Planet.
