Major prizes at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) were awarded to "Parasite" and its director, Bong Joon Ho, on December 9, 2019. "Parasite" took home the award for Best Film and also Best Director.

Song Kang Ho was awarded the prize for best supporting actor. According to a report from Vulture, the film was only second to Noah Baumbach's "Marriage Story" for winning in the Best Screenplay category.

"Parasite" arises as an underdog of films among other highly rated films and seasoned filmmakers. The South Korean thriller beat Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman" for the "Best Film" category. LAFCA honors international and diverse cinema. Many foreign language films have also earned this top award in the past. These films include "Roma" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."

"Our esteemed winners this year continue our association's trend of championing a diverse and inclusive slate of extraordinary films," said LAFCA president Claudia Puig.

"Winning filmmakers hail from around the globe, including Korea, Spain and France, emphasizing how film transcends geographic borders and speaks to our shared emotional experience."
