'Sherlock' Season 5 News: Benedict Cumberbatch Eager For Another Installment After Robert Downey Jr's 'Sherlock Holmes 3' Gets A Release Date
The Sherlocks might be set for a major comeback. Fans were recently delighted when Warner Bros. announced the Sherlock Holmes 3 release date, confirming that Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as the eccentric detective on the silver screen. But is it possible that the Arthur Conan Doyle character will also return to TV? Benedict Cumberbatch is reportedly eager to play the Baker Street icon one more time in Sherlock Season 5.
Fans have been wondering about the future of the BBC show since the Sherlock Season 4 finale, which seemed like an actual series finale. Nevertheless, people continued to hope for Sherlock Season 5 despite Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman's busy schedule with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Interestingly, things may have changed since Doctor Strange's untimely death in Avengers: Infinity War. Is it finally time for Cumberbatch to don the deerstalker again?
Steven Moffat has confirmed that he still has plans for Sherlock Season 5. According to Radio Times, the former Doctor Who showrunner admitted that he would "love to come back and do a future show some day" and even pointed out that Benedict Cumberbatch "is very keen to play [Sherlock] again." However, Moffat stated that he and his crew are "not doing it right now" since they are busy with the still-untitled Dracula TV series.
So when exactly is Sherlock Season 5 happening? There are speculations that the pressure is on for Benedict Cumberbatch now that his Avengers: Infinity War co-star Robert Downey Jr. is confirmed for Sherlock Holmes 3. Variety reports that Downey will reunite with upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Jude Law in the sequel which is scheduled for release on December 25, 2020. Although Cumberbatch has several projects lined up until Avengers 4 in 2019, the Doctor Strange star has plenty of time after that. It is possible that he will reunite with Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and Martin Freeman by 2020.
It is important to point out that the Sherlock Season 5 air date has not yet been confirmed so it is best to take the details with a grain of salt. In the meantime, fans can expect to see the two Sherlocks Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr. return in Avengers 4, which is set to hit theaters on May 3, 2019.
