Twitter Officially Increased its Characters to 280

The Microblogging Giant known as Twitter has recently rolled out 280-character tweets to its user from around the globe. The hashtag #280Characters has been shared at least 350,000 times since the announcement on Tuesday. However, the changes received mixed reactions from its users.

Some were delighted with the changes and are keen to make full use of the much-allotted space while others are a bit concern about it. Twitter first began trying the extended tweet length with a few select group of Twitter users in late September, which caused some to question Twitter's original priorities. According to Reuters, Twitter's test results showed that users spent less time editing their tweets and were also less likely to delete them. Now with the extended character length officially rolled out on Nov. 7, people quickly took it to the test and tried to use it in creative ways

According to Twitter's official blog, several of its users used the full 280 limit because it was new, but soon after the activity went back to normal. Still, most people tweeted 140 characters which still maintains Twitter's brand.

Twitter's product manager Aliza Rosen was concerned that the users' timelines may fill up with the latest character increase, and people would naturally play with the new limit and would always use the whole space.

However, it didn't happen the way they expected. In fact, people who participated with the test results went back to their normal behavior soon after the update was released. This, in turn, shows that Twitter was still able to maintain its brand when they originally started. Meanwhile, users who are posting in languages such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, which do not have an issue with the limited characters, will continue to have the old 140-character limit.
