Facebook stopped working for users in some parts of the United States, Europe and Canada. The common problems were that accounts were inaccessible since Wednesday and the social media giant confirmed that they were having technical issues. Specifically, users who were trying to log into their Facebook via desktop computers were routed to a blank white screen. Good news was that Facebook mobile was working the whole time.

As of 4:00 am on October 12, Facebook for Developers stated that they were seeing performance numbers improving. The main issue, however, was still in progress and that they were looking whether the API errors that they previously detected have subsided gradually. In a previous update by 12:08 am on the same day, developers at Facebook informed users that the problems were caused by escalating level of API errors. It started to investigate the matter around this time and promised to keep users updated on most relevant developments. The problem was defined particularly as "Degraded API Performance" with a corresponding note that stated "unknown errors, OAuthExceptions, Intermittent API errors/failures."

Facebook outage today was specifically detected by 6:20 p.m. EDT, according to DownDetector.com. This site served as an outage watchdog. At the time of the writing of this article, there were already 12,000 reported incidents of the Facebook issue from the site. Forty percent of the reports were users having troubles logging into their accounts, 38% reported of a total account blackout while 21% reported about apps not working properly. A Facebook spokesperson told Reuters that Facebook management was aware of the problem and staff were working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

There were about more than 5,000 comments on DownDetector.com as of 10:37pm EDT. One user from Canada stated that she was not able to log in since Tuesday and resetting password prompted an error code 500. She was also having difficulty reporting the issue and was not even permitted to create a new Facebook account. One netizen from Western, New York said that Facebook was totally down in the area while another from Colorado claimed that Facebook servers seemed to have crashed. A third netizen from Arizona claimed that the problem started two days ago while a fourth netizen ranted about games not being playable.  A fifth netizen shared that posts in his Facebook page kept appearing as unavailable.
