Brendan Dassey is nephew of Steven Avery, the subject of the Netflix TV series 'Making a Murderer.'

There is a possibility that Steven Avery's nephew Brendan Dassey will be featured as a free man in "Making a Murderer" Season 2. Netflix has yet to announce the release of the documentary series' new season and the people behind the show have many things to look forward to.

One of these is the recent development in the case of Dassey. On June 22, Thursday, a three-judge federal appeals panel ruled that the confession Avery's nephew made was improperly obtained.

This means Dassey should be either re-tried or released from prison. Featured in "Making a Murderer" Season 1, the confession he made as a minor led to his sentence in 2007, which was to life in prison.

Prior to this, Avery was wrongfully convicted for the sexual assault and attempted murder of Penny Beerntsen, He served 18 years in prison for it but in 2003, DNA evidence fully exonerated him.

In 2005, Avery was arrested on charges of murdering a photographer named Teresa Halbach and was sentenced to life in prison. Dassey told detectives that he helped his uncle rape and kill the victim in their family's Manitowoc County salvage yard.

For Johnny Koremenos, a spokesman for Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel, there is a need to reverse the erroneous decision recently made by the judges in favor of Dassey. Among the steps Wisconsin can do is to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court within 90 days.

"We continue to send our condolences to the Halbach family as they have to suffer through another attempt by Mr. Dassey to re-litigate his guilty verdict and sentence," Koremenos said in a statement obtained by The Telegraph. As for Dassey's lawyers, they are ready to secure his release as soon as possible.

According to Dassey's lawyers, Avery's nephew has lost 4,132 days of his life to prison. On the other hand, they are overjoyed by the recent decision by the judges, they said in a joint statement obtained by BBC.

Dassey's lawyers are from the Center on Wrongful Convictions of Youth at Northwestern University. One of them is Attorney Laura Nirider, who recently said they want to send Avery's nephew to his mother soon.
