South Korea And China Tunnel Crash Kills 11 Children
May 10th 2017: A bus carrying school children crashes in a tunnel in China's Eastern Shandong province. The crash resulted in the loss of life of 11 young children. The coach driver, responsible for the bus was also killed on the spot, while a teacher has survived with major injuries.
The bus was carrying children between the ages of 3 and 7. The children were being driven to their kindergarten in the city of Weihai when the crash happened. Early pictures show the coach in flames while smoke pours out of the tunnel. The accident is currently under investigation.
The Coach was headed for Zhongshi International School in Weihai. Out of all the 11 children that were killed, 10 were of South Korean decent whereas one of them was of Chinese nationality. The acting president of South Korea, Hwang Kyo-Ahn expressed his deepest condolences and ordered the foreign ministry to mobilize all "diplomatic resources" in order to keep the families informed about each and every development in the case.
This is not the first time, a road accident has shaken the two nations. In 2014, 11 children died when a minibus driving the children home from kindergarten, crashed into a nearby pond. In 2011, 18 children and two adults were killed in an accident when an overloaded school bus collided with a coal truck. The collision was due to the severely foggy conditions in the Gansu Province.
