"Descendants of the Sun" ranked first during the 2017 Korea Communications Commission Broadcasting Awards held on Monday, March 20. According to Korea Herald, "Descendants of the Sun" which aired on KBS got the highest scores not only for the screenplay but also for its "depiction of the core humanitarian values of peace and dedication while being hugely popular at home and abroad." Viewership ratings for the series reached 38.8 percent in South Korea. For a drama that airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays, this rating is more than impressive.

"Descendants of the Sun" is an action-packed series revolving on the romance between Army Capt. Yoo Si-jin (Song Joong-ki) and a doctor Kang Mo-yeon (Song Hye-kyo). In 2016, the series aired on KBS2 TV in South Korea and in the Chinese broadcasting network iQiyi.

There were 338 entries that were evaluated by KCC and out of all those "Descendants of the Sun" won the Grand Prize. This decision was based on the script, the acting skills of the drama's lead characters, as well as the message of peace and the importance of human life conveyed in the series.

Aside from "Descendants of the Sun," 13 other titles won awards. "Barrier-free Opera," a radio series from KNN, bagged second place.
