Duterte accepts 2017 ASEAN chairmanship.

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte accepted the chairmanship for 2017 ASEAN Summit on Thursday.

During the closing ceremony of this year's summit, Mr. Duterte emphasized that he "will highlight ASEAN as a model of regionalism and a global player with the interest of the people at its core" as he assumed the position.

He assured Philippines' readiness and willingness to provide guidance and support to the Association. However, he stated that "crucial to the realization of our goals is the cooperation and support of all ASEAN member-states and our dialogue partners."

The newly seated president added that the country's initiatives include enhancing global cooperation and ensuring stability, peace, growth and security, CNN reported.

The summit to be held in Manila will have the theme "Partnering for Change, Engaging the World." Mr. Duterte aims to attain a "sense of togetherness and common identity" and "take our rightful place in the global community of nations."

During his speech, Mr. Duterte addressed his counterparts as "vibrant and dynamic partners." He added that during his stay in Laos for the summit, he gathered "insights" on how the national government exert effort in building its communities.

Mr. Duterte expressed his appreciation of Laos' Prime Minister's effort in "deepening integration to move us towards the realization of a rule-based, people oriented, people-centered ASEAN community."

Next year's ASEAN marks the 50th founding anniversary of the association, Inquirer reported.

Chairmanship in the association rotates every year based on alphabetical order of the state members' English name according to Article 31 of ASEAN's constitution.

The Philippines hosted the summit in the years 1987, 1999, and 2006.

Prior the ASEAN Summit 2016, Mr. Duterte was all over the news for his colorful remarks towards U.S President Barack Obama. Reports tell that the two met on Wednesday and that Obama did not take the controversial remarks personally.
