James Gunn, director of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, credits the film's lead actor Chris Pratt for the brilliant idea of recommending action star Kurt Russell to play Star Lord's father in the film.

Gunn said "He was actually not in my head initially, but one day Chris suggested him. I would have been really disappointed if Kurt had said no. Hey, if you have to cast anything, Kurt's a pretty good way to go."

Strong Family Theme

Chris Pratt reprises his role as Star Lord in the surprise Marvel smash hit Guardians of the Galaxy. In the first film he wondered who his father was and now in the sequel he will meet him in the form of Ego -a gigantic sentient living planet that has the power to take human form which Kurt Russell will play.

Director Gunn pointed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 "has a very strong family theme which will significantly play out in Pratt and Russell's father-son relationship."

Chris Pratt echoed Gunn's comments stating that "You're going to see these characters having to endure the realities of being in a family. You're talking about a guy who's been longing to know who his father is for a long time. He'll discover if that person lives up to the expectations he has in his head."

Pantheon of Action Gods

Pratt has been unabashed in paying homage to the action stars of the 90s which he said has inspired him and brought him to where he is now. Russell is one of those venerated veterans high in Pratt's pantheon of Hollywood action gods.

After filming with Russell was over, Pratt tweeted that Russell is just simply one of the best out there.
