'Cloverfield 2's' Story May Be Darker Than Original Film; Spoilers And New Trailer [Video] Inside

Last month, moviegoers were surprised when a trailer for "Cloverfield 2" dropped in theaters unannounced.

Since then, little information and spoilers have been revealed about the mysterious film.

Producers have followed up with several teasers, although none of them really reveal anything new about the movie.

Here's the latest trailer:

J.J. Abrams has confirmed that it's a new "Cloverfield" movie, explaining to Collider that "the idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of 'Cloverfield.' The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible."

However, new spoilers reveal that the forthcoming movie wasn't even in the same universe as "Cloverfield" when it began filming.

A Reddit post reveals that the movie, previously titled "The Cellar," didn't include a giant monster in its story. The movie was was scrapped by the studio and brought back up by Paramount.

"Paramount bought it back up and had Dan Casey and Damien Chazelle do some re-writes so that it would connect to the 'Cloverfield' universe and they went back and did reshoots and add-ons in March 2015 in New Orleans and L.A," the Reddit user said.

According to Den of Geek, "Cloverfield" was a movie that "shot out of nowhere," courtesy of a trailer for the film when nobody knew at that point that it even existed.

The website alleges that Paramount is doing the same thing with "Cloverfield 2," keeping everything a secret until the movie finally comes out in theaters.

Cast member Mary Elizabeth Winstead had this to say about the movie.

"There is this veil of secrecy to it from the very beginning," the "Scott Pilgrim vs The World" actress said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

"We were making this movie in this little bubble where nobody else knew what we were doing and there's really only three actors in the whole thing, so it kind of felt like this really intimate experience."

"Cloverfield 2" also stars John Goodman ("Flight") and John Gallagher Jr. ("Jonah Hex"). The movie will be released in theaters on March 11, 2016.
