Scarlett Johansson Begins Filming For The 'Ghost In The Shell' Live-Action Movie In New Zealand

Scarlett Johansson has started filming for her lead role in the "Ghost In The Shell" live-action movie.

Johansson, who is set to play the main character in the adaptation of the cult Japanese anime, is in New Zealand to film at Stone Street Studios in Miramar, New Zealand Herald reported. 

According to the publication, the "Avengers: Age of Ultron" actress arrived in Wellington over the weekend and was accompanied by her husband Romain Dauriac and their 16-month-daughter Rose.

The "Lucy" star has already visited the studio and met its staff and some of the actors involved.

"She met the wardrobe, directors, various VIPS that take care of things," a source reportedly claimed.

Scarlett Johansson was also spotted at a local gym with her husband and a bodyguard probably preparing for her "Ghost In The Shell" live-action movie role.

"She arrived at a local south Wellington gym fairly innocuously with a group, she was wearing trainers, training gear and a hat," added the source. "To the uninitiated no-one would have known she was a star."

The Daily Mail has confirmed that Scarlett Johansson and her husband and her daughter will be in Wellington for the next two months as she films for the upcoming adaptation.

The live-action movie is based on the Japanese manga of the same name by creator Masamune Shirow. It was adapted into an animated feature in 1995 and has since branched out into an animated series, video games and merchandise.

The original story is set in 2029 and takes place in futuristic Japan. It is uncertain if the movie will be based on the source material.

"Maleficent" actor Sam Riley will play the movie's main antagonist while Scarlett's "Lucy" co-star Pilou Asbaek is set to portray her character's sidekick.

The "Ghost In The Shell" live-action movie is helmed by "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders.

The film releases in theaters on March 31, 2017.
