Korean Team Wins the “Hackers’ World Cup”

Korea's team of hackers has won the top prize during the DEFCON Capture the Flag (CTF) 23 event in Las Vegas, Nevada. Called DEFKOR, the members comprise the security tech team of Raonsecure - a provider of IT security solutions - and students from the information security club of Korea University.

DEFKOR has dominated the international convention, winning the Hackers' World Cup. The members have done well since Day 1, scoring 20,136 points. They have outdone Taiwanese HITCON by nearly twice the latter's total points.

The Science, ICT and Future Planning Ministry formed the group of students through the Best of Best (BoB) program, developed to hone another generation of computer and tech security leaders. The training initiative aims to produce 130 white hackers annually.

The attendees of the worldwide hacking convention - held from August 6-9, 2015 at Bally's Hotel and Paris Hotel - include hackers, federal government workers, computer security specialists, lawyers, journalists and security researchers. All the participants have a general interest in anything they can 'crack' or 'hack' - including computer architecture, software, hardware modification and phone phreaking. The event features lectures, social activities and tournaments - from creating Wi-Fi connection to cracking network systems.

Among these, Capture the Flag (CTF) is the most popular. The competition involves a team of hackers trying to outdo each other while attempting to defend/attack computers using specific network and software structures. And Korea's DEFKOR has dominated the competition.
