The "God of War" movie has been stuck in development hell since it was announced in 2005.

Several writers have since been attached to the project, although no script has ever been reported to be in any real stage of development.

However, it was later on reported that "Piranha 3DD" writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan were acquired by producers to breathe new life into the project.

Screen Rant asked about what fans can expect from the planned movie adaptation, to which the writers compared "God of War" to "Batman."

"In the same way that Batman was grounded with Christopher Nolan's rendition, we were attempting to do that with Kratos so that when we meet him - like they're doing in this newest game, which is sort of a prequel to the original - we're seeing him before he became the Ghost of Sparta, when he was just a Spartan warrior and he had family and kids," the writers explained.

For those unfamiliar, the "God of War" video game follows the story of Kratos, a Grecian warrior who seeks assistance from the god of war, Ares. Their allegiance results to the destruction of Kratos' hometown and family, which sets him on a rampage to kill the god.

In the movie, however, Melton and Dunstan said they wanted to give the character a backstory before setting him out on his quest for revenge.

"In the game, you know, he's immortal, and he doesn't really do much besides raid Athens," they added. "So we're trying to build him up a bit more, too, so that he can become a true villain."

Although nothing has been set in stone yet, fans of the franchise are already speculating on who might portray the "Ghost of Sparta."

Actors that have been rumored for the role include "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and "Fast & the Furious" franchise star Vin Diesel.
