Nathan Darrow is Mr. Freeze in 'Gotham'. Season 2 return is on February 29

Previous spoilers for "Gotham" season 2 revealed that Mr. Freeze will take over the second half of 2015-16 run of the Fox TV series.

Mr. Freeze/Victor Fries, to be played by "House of Cards" star Nathan Darrow, is one of the most iconic Batman villains, and many fans of the DC character are privy of his origin story.

In "Gotham" season 2, executive producer Bruno Heller said they will stick to the source material. The catch, however, is that they will put more focus on his love for his wife before becoming the villain that he is.

"We're taking it back to the roots of the origin story," executive producer Bruno Heller dished in his "Gotham" season 2 spoilers to TV Guide.

"It's about him and his wife before he became a bad guy, how he became a bad guy. It's very much a story of the heart rather than a story about technology and super-villainy. It's a doomed romance. It will make people cry."

Mr. Freeze's love for his wife has been his strongest motivation to kill Batman in many iterations of his origin story in the comics. He is a former cryogenics expert who figured into an industrial accident while working on a cure for his terminally ill wife, Nora Fries.

Fans of the show got their first glimpse of Mr. Freeze in "Gotham" season 2 mid-season finale when he attacked Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) who has just finished with Theo Galavan.

The return of Gotham season 2 is on Feb. 19, and according to spoilers from McKenzie, a crazy character is also going to make a comeback. This means more trouble for Jim.

"She's in a coma, and in Gotham that means she's very much alive and she's coming back," McKenzie told audiences in the Gotham panel at the Wizard World New Orleans when asked to share "Gotham season 2 spoilers regarding Barbara who was last seen in an ambulance after falling off a building.

"And they have a very complicated relationship, which we've only really begun to explore. There's a lot more to come."
