In contrast to big-budget films that advertise upcoming films years before its actual release, JJ Abrams managed to sneak "Cloverfield 2" right under everyone's nose.

According to HitFix, the "Star Wars: Force Awakens" helmer released the trailer for "10 Cloverfield Lane" through a showing of Michael Bay's "13 Hours."

Wired further reported that Abrams' production company, Bad Robot, managed to keep the entire filming a secret from the world by disguising it as different movie altogether.

The sneaky director reportedly had the film enter production under helmer Dan Trachtenberg's name and tagging it as an apocalyptic movie with the title "Valencia."

The Week noted that JJ Abrams' "Cloverfield 2" will "not retain the found-footage style of the original movie," therefore not making it a sequel to the first film.

The director himself seemed to have confirmed that "10 Cloverfield Lane" isn't exactly a sequel to his previous work.

"The idea came up a long time ago during production," he reportedly told Collider. "We wanted to make it a blood relative of 'Cloverfield.' The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible."

While this surprise film does have "Cloverfield" in its title, it was tagged as a "blood relative" of the film. Den of Geek even noted a Reddit rumor that the said sequel didn't start out as anything related to "Cloverfield" at all.

"Valencia" or "The Cellar" was allegedly the original project which was scrapped by Paramount Pictures.

"The anonymous post on Reddit claims that 'The Cellar' was only revived as a 'Cloverfield' sequel after Paramount's Insurge Division was closed down, effectively leaving the project on the shelf," the site noted.

IMDB's synopsis of the film read, "Waking up from a car accident, a young woman finds herself in the basement of a man who says he's saved her life from a chemical attack that has left the outside uninhabitable."
