Fire Emblem Fates: Nintendo Scraps Controversial 'Gay Conversion Drugging' Scene; Release Date Confirmed
"Fire Emblem Fates," Nintendo's 14th installment of its franchise, has reportedly removed a side story of its North American and European versions which previewed a "gay conversion drugging" scene.
Reports claimed that Nintendo decided to remove some parts from game series wherein a heterosexual male character was shown drugging a female homosexual while asking her to change her sexual preference.
"Fire Emblem" allows players to create relationships between the characters by having a close fight to each other. The mechanic is applicable to the new "Fire Emblem Fates" which also gives game play bonuses that will bring the characters into new conversations.
As for the rewrites, while such issues have been denied earlier by Nintendo, the revision will still push through following reports claiming that a lot of fans were enraged after taking a look on the new entry "Fire Emblem Fates."
Despite several hints about the game series, it is still not clear yet as to how the string will come into view for the North American viewers after the changes.
"In the version of the game that ships in the U.S and Europe, there is no expression which might be considered as gay conversion or drugging that occurs between characters," as quoted in Nintendo World Report.
The news about the "gay conversion drugging" scene first sparked after a Japanese version of the hit role-playing video game was dropped in June last year. Reports added that after the release, the scene about drugging a woman's drink did not sit well to the fans.
Adding to the offense, a homosexual character was forced to become heterosexual, which was then termed by various Christian groups as "gay conversion therapies."
"Fire Emblem Fates," the first game in the series to feature same-sex marriages, will be released in North America on February 19, Friday.
