Samsung's rumoured release this 2016 is an innovation never before seen. The Korean tech giant is reportedly planning to release a smartphone with a foldable plastic display sometime in January next year.

Reputable Samsung tipster SamMobile revealed that Samsung is currently testing the new design through a secret project called Project Valley, Mashable wrote Sept. 15. Two models of the device is expected to be released, and is rumoured to come with 3GB of RAM, a non-removable battery and a microSD card slot.

Business Insider reported Sept. 15 that two versions of foldable smartphone are being tested in different configurations namely the Snapdragon 620 processor and the faster Snapdragon 820 chipset. Other than that, there are no further details on Samsung's rumoured foldable release.

The reports do not come unprecedented. In 2008, Samsung teased the public with a prototype of a screen that folds in half. The prototype was displayed at The Society for Information Display event where innovations on display technology are showcased.

However, rumor has it that the foldable smartphone will only be released in South Korea, the same way Samsung's curved display Galaxy Round was only enjoyed by South Korean consumers.

FirstPost Tech noted on Sept. 19 that the foldable display smartphone might give Samsung a much-needed boost in terms of sales since the company a slide in numbers in recent months. The decline has been attributed to the release of smartphones from Chinese manufacturers that come with better specs but sold for cheaper prices.

Samsung's troubled situation has forced the company to design new devices and create new features such as the recent the S Pen stylus and the dual-curved display on the Samsung Galaxy S6. The innovative foldable display offering could be Samsung's solution to regaining its top spot in the market.
