SHINee's Onew is going to appear in KBS's most awaited drama "Descendants of the Sun" where he portrays the role of a doctor that goes to different places for volunteer work under the guidance of Song Hye Kyo's character.

Lee Jinki or popularly known with his stage name Onew takes on the character of Dr. Lee Chi Hoon who comes from a well-off family but chooses to work with Doctors without Borders to prove his love for public service.

While fans are excited to finally see him act with huge Korean actors such as Song Joong Ki, who portrays the role of a cocky United Nations peacekeeping officer named Captain Yoo Shi Jin, they must take the other end of the stick too as Hello K-Pop delivered news that Onew's character is apparently engaged to Dr. Jang, played by Jo Woo Ri, and word is that the fictional couple is expecting a baby.

The Kim Eun Suk-penned drama must have gotten Onew and Woo Ri closer in real life because even though the SHINee's leader rarely updates his Instagram account, they found the time to follow each other on social media.

The premiere date of "Descendants of the Sun" is on Feb. 24 in KBS 2 TV and will simultaneously air in China on the same day, as reported by Soompi News. The drama is completely pre-recorded and the cast and crew wrapped up filming last December.

The Song Hye Kyo and Song Joong Ki starred "Descendants of the Sun" is highly anticipated in South Korea. It has topped the most awaited drama poll by Good Data. This is also notably Joong Ki's first drama after he was released from the army. Onew, who was once dubbed as the actor's twin for having facial features nearly resembling one another, fits to be his little brother from the perspective of the fans.

Working with such big names in the industry would be beneficial for Onew in improving his acting skills although he already has acting experiences from cameos in previous dramas such as in "Athena: Goddess of War," "Dr. Champ," "Oh My God x2," "Pure Love" and two musicals in 2010 namely, "Brothers were Brave" and "Rock of Ages." He also starred in JTBC's 2013 comic sitcom entitled "The Royal Villa" where he portrayed the role of a jobless scholar living with a ghost.

The video trailer of "Descendants of the Sun" had spectators laughing as Onew was shown donned in a blue polo and a doctor's gown frantically running to stop two women from pulling each other's hair. The 26 year old singer-turned-actor received words of good luck from fans for his role in the drama.

Meanwhile, Onew is currently promoting with his group SHINee for their newest Japanese album "DxDxD" and will be frequenting the country for their Japanese Arena Tour that will kick off this Jan. 30 in Fukuoka.
