Prince Harry and Meghan at Cotswolds Pub: What We Know
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were photographed holding hands outside the Falkland Arms, a village pub in Great Tew, in the Cotswolds, on Thursday, Oct. 1. Photos appeared Oct. 2 in Hello! and were picked up the following day by The Nightly, The Sun, Vanity Fair and AOL. It is the first public outing together in Britain since the family arrived in August.
What is confirmed
The pair were seen in the pub on Thursday and pictured outside it. Meghan wore a black sweater, dark pants, white sneakers and sunglasses. Harry wore jeans, a jacket, sunglasses and a Santa Barbara Fire Department cap.
The family landed in Britain on Aug. 16, AFP reported, after leaving their home in Montecito, California. Their children, Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, are enrolled in British schools. (One Hello! passage gives Lilibet's age as four; other outlets say five.)
The outing follows a stretch of single appearances. Meghan posted an Instagram video on Sept. 13 showing puddle-splashing, and in September she lunched with Ellen DeGeneres at the Three Horseshoes in Burford. Harry has attended the WellChild Awards, an Invictus gala and a black-tie event for Ukraine, and made a trip to New York.
On Sept. 30, the day before the pub lunch, the couple condemned paparazzi near their children's school. Reports say the family changed schools after a security breach.
What is reported but not confirmed
Meghan reportedly ordered gluten-free beer-battered haddock and chips with mushy peas, at £18.25. Harry reportedly had a chicken, ham and leek pie with greens and mash, at £17.95. These details come from tabloid and magazine accounts, not a statement from the pub or the couple.
A member of the pub's staff was quoted as saying: "Everyone here gets the royal treatment." The speaker was not named in the reports reviewed.
Some outlets say the family has bought a farmhouse in the area. Neither the couple's representatives nor property records cited in those reports confirm it.
Hello! says Harry has not seen King Charles in person since returning. The palace has not commented in the reports reviewed.
Why it is drawing attention
Searches for "prince harry news" passed 10,000 on Google Trends on Oct. 5, a sign of the interest in the family's move. Meghan's September lunch with DeGeneres was also in the Cotswolds, in Burford.
Representatives for the couple have not said how long the family plans to stay in Britain.
