Soyeon Drops First Solo Album 'What a Wonderful Life'
Soyeon posted three words on Instagram last month, standing in front of Cube Entertainment's headquarters: "퇴사할게요" - I'm quitting. Fans spent days debating what it meant. On September 7 at 6 p.m. KST, the mystery resolved: it was the title of the lead single on her first full-length solo album, "끝내주는 인생" ("What a Wonderful Life").
The album is Soyeon's first solo release since her 2021 mini album "Windy" - five years and two months, and her first-ever full-length project as a solo artist. She wrote and composed all eight tracks herself, working with producers including Groovyroom and R.Tee across genres that range from rock to hyperpop to disco. The title track, "퇴사할게여 (Narr. 기안84)," features narration from broadcaster Kian84 and sets its resignation concept against an analog band sound, opening with the line "I'm quitting. There's nothing I'll miss." The tracklist also includes "Bankroll," "icebluerabbit," "STAR," "야채 싫어 송," "Amigo" (featuring Minsu), "그냥 사랑하면 안 될까," and "낭만 보내기."
Soyeon built the rollout around the same misdirection as the album's premise. The August building post came weeks before Cube revealed the tracklist, styled as a resignation letter displayed on a retro CRT monitor - a design choice that let "I'm Quitting" become the title track's punchline rather than its spoiler. Some fans took the original post literally enough to speculate online about a group departure; the tracklist reveal on August 27 shut that down. "STAR," her first solo song in five years, arrived earlier in the promotional cycle built on retro synths and a driving bassline, giving fans an initial read on the sound before the full album's range became clear.
The album's arrival isn't happening in a vacuum. Since "Windy," Soyeon has spent five years as (G)I-DLE's primary producer, writing and shaping the group through a run of world tours that included a first-ever Taipei Dome show by a K-pop girl group this year and a Lollapalooza Chicago set this July, where the group's self-produced sound drew a heavier live-band treatment than most K-pop festival slots attempt. That track record - a member credited as her group's chief songwriter taking her own material on the road as a soloist - is the same pattern that turned Rosé and Jennie's BLACKPINK writing credits into solo careers, giving American listeners a familiar shape for what Soyeon is doing now, on her own terms and outside the group format.
Soyeon marks the release tonight with a guerrilla live performance at Yeouido Hangang Park's Mulbit Stage in Seoul - entry opens at 6:30 p.m. KST, with the show starting at 8 p.m. No further tour dates have been announced.
