A2O Lite 'Neon' Hits Melon No. 1 in 29 Hours: Fastest Debut
Twenty-nine hours. That is how long A2O Lite's debut single "Neon" took to reach No. 1 on Melon's Top 100, the fastest debut-song climb since Melon revamped the chart in August 2021, allkpop and The Korea Herald reported.
"Neon" came out at 6 p.m. KST on Oct. 13 and entered the chart at No. 77 four hours later. By 9 a.m. the next morning it was No. 10. It held No. 2 at 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Oct. 14, then passed I-dle member Soyeon's "I'm Gonna Toesa" at 11 p.m. to take the top spot. By the early hours of Oct. 15 it had slipped to No. 6, and Soyeon's song was back on top, the Herald said.
The earlier records were slower. ALLDAY Project's "Famous" needed 77 hours in 2025, NewJeans' "Attention" took eight days in 2022, and ILLIT's "Magnetic" took less than two weeks in 2024, according to allkpop. Melon's ranking combines the last 24 hours of streaming with the last hour, so a song with heavy activity in a short window can climb quickly.
A2O Lite is a nine-member group with members from Korea, China, Japan and Thailand. It debuted on Oct. 13 alongside the 15-member boy group A2O Soul, whose pre-release single "Superstar" came out at the same time. Lee Soo-man introduced both groups at a joint showcase at Kintex in Goyang on Oct. 12. Lee founded SM Entertainment, the company behind Girls' Generation, EXO and aespa, and the Herald described A2O Lite as his first girl group aimed at the domestic market since he left SM in 2023. None of the coverage reviewed reports where "Superstar" charted.
"Neon" was produced by Yoo Young-jin, the longtime SM producer whose credits include Girls' Generation, SHINee and aespa. Music critic Lim Hee-yun told the Herald that the sound is recognizably SM, close to f(x) and aespa, which may suit longtime K-pop listeners but leaves its wider appeal unproven.
Lim also questioned what the number measures. He said the "buzz played a major role," pointing to the curiosity around Lee's return and what he called considerable social media promotion. A first-day chart run shows how many people listened first. It does not show how many stayed.
Lee framed the debut differently at the showcase. He said he wants listeners to feel the music is good before they look for what is different, allkpop reported.
A2O Lite makes its first music show appearance on Mnet's "M Countdown" on Oct. 15. "Neon" was No. 6 on Melon when that day began.
