Taylor Swift SNL Cameo With Dakota Johnson: What She Said
Dakota Johnson was walking the "Saturday Night Live" audience through her love life when she introduced her "literal therapist." Taylor Swift appeared on screen to correct her.
"I'm not your therapist, actually," Swift said, then described the arrangement: Johnson turns up once a week with an empty wine bottle, flops on the couch and overshares, and Swift ends the night with Pedialyte and a ride home from her security team.
The Oct. 3 cameo was Swift's first on-screen appearance on the show in three years. Her last was in October 2023, when she introduced musical guest Ice Spice. She hosted once, in 2009, and has been the musical guest four times, the last in 2021, according to Variety.
The setup was Johnson's own. She joked about her breakups with Coldplay's Chris Martin and the singer Role Model, and called her new film "Verity," which opened Oct. 2, a "psychosexual erotic thriller." Minutes later, with Swift beside her, she thanked America, England, parts of Ireland and Cleveland, which Variety read as a nod to Swift's partner, Travis Kelce. The line drew a one-word rejoinder: "Allegedly."
The friendship has a public paper trail from the past week. Johnson stars in the video for Swift's single "Patient Zero," which Swift directed. It premiered Sunday, Sept. 27, at the MTV Video Music Awards, and casts Johnson and Colin Farrell as a couple whose marriage looks to be failing, with Swift as a spectral figure warning Johnson about her husband. E! News reported that Cara Delevingne and Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford also appear. On Saturday, hours before the show, Swift released "Patient Zero (Expanded Video)," an eight-minute cut with making-of scenes that is exclusive to Apple Music.
Swift's latest release is "The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore," an expanded edition of her 2025 album with four additional tracks, out Sept. 25.
The episode was Johnson's third time hosting, and her 37th birthday arrived at midnight. Turnstile, the Baltimore band, made its "SNL" debut as musical guest, which left the cameo to overshadow the band's set, according to Boston.com. The timing was good for Johnson commercially, too: "Verity" opened to about $32.6 million, according to Amazon MGM's Sunday studio estimate.
Next week, Shane Gillis hosts with Rosalía as musical guest.
When the cast gathered for the goodnights, Swift came back out carrying a birthday cake for Johnson.
