Between Steps (Disney+)

ENA's new Monday-Tuesday drama "Between Steps" premieres Oct. 5 at 10 p.m. KST, pairing Choo Young-woo and Kim So-hyun in a romance set in a university robotics lab. It is also the last series directed by Ahn Pan-seok, who died Aug. 12 while the show was in editing.

The series will stream on KT Genie TV in Korea and on Disney+ in select regions. Regional availability on Disney+ has not been confirmed for every market, so viewers outside Korea should check their local listings.

Choo plays Park Min-jae, a former competitive swimmer who lost a leg to illness, osteosarcoma, and is now a doctoral student working in a robotics lab. Kim plays Im Yoo-jin, a graduate student in clothing and textiles who joins the same lab as a newcomer. The supporting cast includes Kim Min-seok, Lee Chang-hoon and Lim Jin-hyo.

Ahn was known for "Something in the Rain," "One Spring Night" and "The Midnight Romance in Hagwon," dramas that built their appeal on small, observed moments between two people. He died on Aug. 12 while post-production on "Between Steps" was underway. The production held its press presentation on Oct. 2 at CGV Yongsan in Seoul.

Executive producer Kim Hyun-jung told reporters about a moment from the shoot that she said defined the director. After a disagreement over a scene, Ahn told the crew, "I was wrong, and this kid was right." She also said Ahn believed a production owes responsibility to the viewers who choose to watch it.

Kim So-hyun said the experience of making the drama led her to "rebuild the foundation of my acting." She did not elaborate on what changed in her approach.

The premiere lands in a crowded Monday-Tuesday slot, and ENA has positioned the series as a character-driven romance rather than a high-concept thriller. The ratings picture will be clearer after the first two episodes air Oct. 5 and 6.

Ahn's earlier dramas were built on slow, specific scenes rather than plot twists, and the setup here, a lab where two people with different training have to learn each other's work, fits that approach. Choo's character is defined by a career that ended and a second one he is building, and Kim's by a change of field. The premise gives both leads a situation of starting over rather than a rivalry.

For international viewers, the practical question is access. Korean viewers can watch on ENA's live broadcast or on KT Genie TV. Those outside Korea should look for the title on Disney+ in their region, and check whether episodes arrive the same day as the Korean broadcast or on a delay.
