BTS Chicago: Illinois Declares 'BTS Day' for Sold-Out Soldier Field Shows, Aug. 27–28
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has proclaimed August 27 and 28 "BTS Day in Illinois," timed to the group's two sold-out ARIRANG World Tour shows at Chicago's Soldier Field this week. Both concerts start at 8 p.m. and sold out through the primary market.
The proclamation, signed earlier this month, credits BTS with using their platform to champion mental health awareness, self-love and global philanthropy, and states that the group's core message aligns with Illinois's civic values. It also recognizes the community service and charitable giving the group's fandom, known as ARMY, has carried out in the group's name.
The designation followed a petition from Chicago BTS Army and the HANA Center, an immigrant advocacy nonprofit based in the city's Irving Park neighborhood. Tameca Denson, lead organizer of the Illinois BTS Proclamation Initiative, said the effort was built around more than the concert dates themselves. "The initiative highlights the profound, real-world civic impact of the band's message of self-love, mental health awareness, and youth empowerment within Illinois," Denson said in a statement.
The same coalition organized a "Borahae Purple" campaign - a reference to the phrase "I purple you," associated with the group - lighting the Willis Tower purple from 8:30 to 11 p.m. on both concert nights. A two-day gathering at Buckingham Fountain runs from 10 a.m. to noon on August 27 and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on August 28, alongside fan events scheduled across Chinatown and downtown Chicago.
BTS first played Soldier Field in 2019. The group's return, seven years and a full round of military enlistments later, lands in a city where the state government has now attached an official designation to the visit rather than treating it as a standard tour stop. Local officials have pointed to an expected economic boost from the thousands of fans traveling into Chicago for the two shows.
Chicago is one stop in a run that has already produced its own list of firsts: the ARIRANG World Tour has included the group's first-ever performances in Madrid and Brussels, the first K-pop concerts at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, and a debut at London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The ARIRANG World Tour continues after Chicago with four dates at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on September 1, 2, 5 and 6.
