The Grammy Deadline Everyone Was Watching Just Passed. The Category Didn't Change.

Online entry for the 69th Grammy Awards closed Friday, and Best Asian Pop Music Performance closed with it - unchanged from the version BTS refused to enter a month ago. The Recording Academy's review of the category, announced August 14, remains open, but no rule change arrived before the deadline that actually mattered.

The math is now fixed. BTS submitted nothing for the 2027 Grammys in any category, a decision the group announced July 29 alongside a joint statement hoping their music could be "heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language." Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. responded seventeen days later, saying the organization would take the criticism "into deeper consideration" after acknowledging that "some artists feel this category does not properly represent the music they have worked so hard to create." Neither statement changed what artists were actually submitting against by the time entry closed at midnight.

That leaves the category's real test sitting with whoever did submit. Under the Academy's published rules, a recording qualifies for Best Asian Pop Music Performance if an Asian language plays "a significant role" in bilingual or multilingual structures - a looser standard than the Latin Grammys' 60 percent lyric threshold, and one the Academy still hasn't clarified with a precise cutoff. Stray Kids, whose members repeatedly declined to confirm submission plans at an August 6 press conference, haven't said publicly whether "This & That" went in. Neither has TWICE. The first concrete sign of who's actually in the category won't surface until nominees are announced November 16.

The Academy's review process continues regardless of the passed deadline - Mason's statement never tied the review to entry timing, and a rule change is still possible before nominees are finalized or, more likely, before next year's cycle. What the review can't do is retroactively add BTS to a ballot the group chose to sit out. The Academy can revise a category. It can't undo a submission window that's now closed.

The 2027 Grammy Awards air February 7 from Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, with first-round voting running October 12 to 22 and nominees announced November 16.
