"Morning Dew (Donk)" itself wasn't new. Beyoncé first released the song as a surprise drop over the Fourth of July weekend, pulling it from material dating back to her 2006 "B'Day" era that had circulated among fans as a leaked demo for years before getting an official release. The Wednesday remix pack builds on that base with a new Jay-Z verse, an acoustic version, and a bass-heavy "Donk Mix," layering in production elements sampled from Sheck Wes's "Mo Bamba" and the Isley Brothers' 1983 hit "Between the Sheets." On his verse, Jay-Z leans into the themes that have defined his recent guest spots - dismissing online critics and referencing his own longevity - in what outlets covering the release described as his first new recorded verse in roughly five years.
The timing isn't incidental. Beyoncé's "B'Day" turns 20 this year, with an anniversary edition due out September 4 - her birthday. Weeks before Wednesday's remix, she'd already made a live appearance tied to Jay-Z's own catalog: she joined him onstage at Yankee Stadium during his three-night run marking the anniversaries of "Reasonable Doubt" and "The Blueprint," singing on "Can't Knock the Hustle" on the first night and "Drunk in Love" on the third.
Online reaction split along familiar lines - some fans questioned whether Jay-Z's guest verse was necessary given he already appears on three tracks from the deluxe edition of "B'Day," while others focused on the unexpected production choices, particularly the layered "Mo Bamba" sample threaded through the bridge. Neither Beyoncé nor Jay-Z has addressed the reaction directly. For a couple who built entire album cycles around collaboration in the 2010s, Wednesday's remix was the first time in years they'd done it again without any announcement at all.
