Shawn Mendes Confirmed His Relationship With Bruna Marquezine. He Waited for Her Birthday to Do It.
Shawn Mendes posted to his Instagram grid with girlfriend Bruna Marquezine for the first time Tuesday, on her 31st birthday, ending months of speculation with a caption written in both English and Portuguese: "Feliz aniversário my baby."
The post centered on video from Casa Amarela Providência, a community center in Rio de Janeiro, where Marquezine spent part of her birthday with local children who sang to her. Mendes called her "a light and a mãe in every room you walk into," thanked the organization directly, and closed the caption in Portuguese, telling her he loved her. It's the first time he's shared her on his main grid since the two were first linked during a trip to South America last December, after which they were photographed together in both Rio and Los Angeles, including a grocery-store outing in January that read, to entertainment press at the time, as an unofficial soft launch.
Tuesday's post was something more direct. Mendes has kept his relationships largely out of view since his on-and-off relationship with Camila Cabello ended for good in 2023 - a partnership that ran from 2019 and became one of the more publicly documented in pop music before it didn't. He was later linked to Sabrina Carpenter in 2023, a rumor he denied outright in an interview with RTL Boulevard, and to Hailey Bieber years earlier, before she was married. None of those speculative periods came with a grid post, a birthday message, or a direct address in two languages. This one did.
Marquezine, a Brazilian actress known for "Gente Inocente" and a supporting role in "Blue Beetle," brings her own following into the relationship - one large enough that Mendes crediting a Rio community center by name, rather than staging the reveal around the two of them alone, reads as a specific choice about where the attention should land.
Neither Mendes nor Marquezine has said anything else publicly since the post went up. For an artist who's spent years being asked about his personal life more than he's volunteered information about it, Tuesday's caption did the volunteering itself.
