Zico, Jay Park Lead Show Me The Money 12 Return After 3-Year Break With Record 36,000 Applicants
Mnet's legendary hip-hop competition Show Me The Money returned today after three years, bringing together eight star producers and the franchise's largest-ever contestant pool. The January 15 premiere marks a new chapter for Korean hip-hop's most influential platform.
Chief Producer Choi Hyo-jin held a press conference in Seoul's Gangnam district alongside the season's producer lineup: Zico, Crush, Gray, Loco, J-Tong, Hukky Shibaseki, Lil Moshpit, and Jay Park. The producer pairings-Zico with Crush, Gray with Loco, J-Tong with Hukky Shibaseki, and Jay Park with Lil Moshpit-represent what fans immediately dubbed a "dream team" combination.
Global Auditions Draw 36,000 Contestants
Season 12 attracted approximately 36,000 applicants through auditions held across 32 locations, including Seoul, Busan, Jeju, Gwangju, and international cities. Contestants submitted verses in 24 different languages, making this the show's most diverse lineup since its 2012 launch.
"We expanded regional auditions beyond Seoul," CP Choi explained. "There's a lot of rap performed in different languages." Jay Park, returning to the show after nine years, found the global participation refreshing. "Many contestants expressed their own cultures through their performances. This is my fourth time on Show Me The Money, and hearing rap in so many languages felt fresh and unconventional."
The competition expands to 12 episodes-the first time the series exceeds its standard 10-episode format. Contestants face 11 missions including returning favorites like the gymnasium audition, fire pit challenge, and diss battles, plus new additions like a "song camp" that tests production skills.
TVING Partnership Creates Parallel Series
Show Me The Money 12 makes franchise history through its collaboration with streaming platform TVING. While the main competition airs Thursdays at 9:20 PM on both Mnet and TVING, an exclusive companion series launches every Saturday at noon on TVING.
"Show Me The Money 12: The World of Yacha" adopts a parallel-world structure that unfolds a different narrative along the same timeline as the main show. The hidden league features 11 masters including Homies (ChinCK-Louie), Loopy, Gaogai, Reddy, APRO, David Youngin Kim, Hangzoo, Ian Cash, and Rad Museum.
"We considered how to create new narrative structure," CP Choi said. "The World of Yacha will present a hip-hop survival show where contestants survive solely through rap in an extreme environment with no fixed rules."
Producers Address Hip-Hop's Changing Landscape
The press conference tackled Korean hip-hop's declining mainstream popularity head-on. Jay Park offered frank perspective on the genre's current challenges.
"K-pop's production quality has risen so high that genre boundaries have blurred," Park said. "Because rap has a lower barrier to entry, some dismiss it as 'kids' play' or misunderstand it as just 'flexing' and 'acting tough.' That's damaged its mass appeal."
Rather than chasing commercial success, Park emphasized authenticity. "If we show our genuine spirit and attitude, people will recognize 'this is the real thing.' This season has many fresh faces-I hope viewers' hearts burn hot watching it."
Zico provided context on hip-hop's rapid evolution: "Korean hip-hop changes its hyped genres every three to four months. But if you have strong individual color within that, you maintain unique charm. Hip-hop keeps changing form, but one core remains unshaken."
Team Dynamics and Strategies
Each producer team brings distinct advantages to the competition. Zico and Crush's long-standing friendship creates natural chemistry. "We both cross genres freely," Zico noted. "We won't limit them to one genre-we'll show their full potential."
Gray and Loco, who both won championships in previous seasons, bring championship experience. "Loco and I met in college and have established chemistry," Gray said. "We've been waiting for Show Me The Money. We're balancing responsibility for both core audiences and mainstream viewers."
Loco added his contestant perspective: "As a former participant, I understand contestants better. Competitions should aim for victory-that's what makes them entertaining."
Newcomers Hukky Shibaseki and J-Tong approach the season with determination. "Our strength is our hungry spirit," Hukky explained. "We're working hard not to fall behind other producers." J-Tong joked about their unpredictable dynamic: "Hukky's unreachable by phone-there's uncertainty. But something powerful will emerge from that."
Lil Moshpit participates under a new stage name rather than his Groovyroom identity. "We felt the music we could present as Groovyroom was limited," he explained. "We wanted another playground, so we created Lil Moshpit with appropriate attitude and music."
Franchise Revival After Uncertain Future
Show Me The Money launched in 2012 as Korea's first hip-hop survival show, producing stars including Loco, Swings, BewhY, and Lee Young-ji-the first female winner who claimed Season 11 in December 2022. After that finale, the show's future remained uncertain amid changing entertainment landscapes.
Mnet greenlit Season 12 in June 2025 as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations. The franchise has shaped Korean hip-hop for over a decade, bridging underground talent with mainstream audiences and consistently producing chart-topping tracks.
Crush emphasized their motivation: "As people who love Korean hip-hop, we participate with sincerity and authenticity. We want Korean hip-hop to break through TV and reach viewers' hearts."
Show Me The Money 12 premiered January 15 at 9:20 PM KST on Mnet and TVING, with "The World of Yacha" debuting January 18 on TVING.
